The Labels Project succeeded in getting the attention of ASTM F43 committee and as a result Revision of F2575-23e2 Standard Practice for Language Translation is currently under consideration by ASTM. The Labels on Translation Output Project, Labels Project for short, aims to promote the use of translation consumer labels by all producers of translated materials. This project started in 2021 at an AsLing conference, and once ASTM and ISO mentioned the use of labels in their translation standards, the project became more involved. We lobbied with the F43 committee for the use of more accurate labels, which resulted in the proposal mentioned above. You can learn more about the Labels Project at our Status of Labels page.
Prof. Alan Melby—Chair of FIT’s Standard Committee, Chair FIT North America, and a member of the editorial team for ASTM 2575—just finished his Labels European Tour.
The tour started in Luxembourg at the AsLing TC46 Conference where he met with the translation department of the European Investment Bank and ended at the FIT Europe Conference, in Budapest, where he also met with the ELTE university. In between, Prof. Melby stopped in Paris for meetings with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and UNESCO, Switzerland and Vienna, to meet with the translation departments of major universities.
